Derry City Council has vowed to keep disruption as a result of Thursday’s strike action by staff to a minimum.
Bin collectors, leisure centre staff and gravediggers as well Housing Executive employees will be among members of the Unite, GMB, NIPSA and Unison trade unions who will take part in a day of industrial action organised throughout the North, England and Wales to express anger at the one per cent pay increase offered to them by the government.
Derry City Council has said it would operate and provide “as normal as service as possible” on the day and would endeavour to ensure any disruption was kept to a minimum.
A Council spokesperson said alternative arrangements have been made for servicing household bin collections normally scheduled for that day.
Confirming that all cityside blue bins (scheduled to be emptied on Thursday) will now be emptied tomorrow (Wednedsay) and all servicing of black bins in the Waterside (scheduled to be emptied on Thursday) will now be emptied on Friday, the spokesperson asked residents to leave their bins out as normal at the usual collection points on the rescheduled days.
The spokesperson confirmed Templemore Sports Complex, City Baths in William Street and Brooke Park Leisure Centre would be closed for the day.
However, Bishop’s Field Sports Centre and 3G pitch will be open as normal.
Lisnagelvin Leisure Centre will also remain open and summer scheme swimming lessons will continue as normal.
The Dog Pound will be staffed by one person who will be based at the kennels on the strike day to undertake dog kenneling duties.
