The time is right to find a resolution to the annual issue of bonfires, a Derry councillor has said.
Sinn Fein Cllr Kevin Campbell said he believed an opportunity existed where an alternative could be found that would allow the entire community to participate in a “fun and safe way” to celebrate the likes of the 15th August.
Cllr Campbell was speaking after comments by local community worker Tommy McCourt that all the Independent councillors were opposed to bonfires.
Cllr Campbell said he believed there was an opportunity to resolve the issue of bonfires for the “betterment of the entire community.”
He added: “Traditional bonfires have degenerated over the years to become a site where excess drinking and anti social behaviour are common place and where the majority of local communities oppose them.
“Over the past few years there has been several serious injuries and tragically the death of a young man at these bonfires.
“Apart from the safety aspect there is also an environmental and cost impact upon the local ratepayer in repairing the damage caused by these unregulated fires.
“I believe that an opportunity exists where we can find an alternative that will allow the entire community to participate in a fun and safe way to celebrate the likes of the 15th August.”
Cllr Campbell concluded: “I am calling on all local community leaders and representatives to come together and devise a strategy that will replace the anti social bonfire with festivals where the entire community can participate and enjoy themselves.”
