Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called for a de-escalation of what she described as the “increasingly dangerous” situation in Gaza.
Speaking ahead of an Ógra Shinn Féin Doire-organised demonstration being held at Derry’s Guildhall at 7.00pm this evening in support of Palestinians, Ms Anderson said the situation in Gaza was becoming “unbearable” for local people.
Ms Anderson: “We have seen almost 500 strikes by Israeli fighter jets in an area the size of Co. Louth with one of the highest population densities in the world. How Israel seeks to avoid mass casualties is yet to be explained?
“The situation in Gaza is now becoming unbearable for the local population with a rising civilian death toll and casualties, the majority of which are civilian including children.
“Things are compounded by the fact that food and medical supplies are limited due to the on-going and unjust blockade of Gaza that has effectively turned the region into an open air prison.
“We need to see an immediate de-escalation and a ceasefire by all sides in this conflict. Both the ongoing assault by Israeli forces and rocket fire from the Gaza Strip should end immediately.”
She concluded: “The Israeli Government must recognise the Palestinian unity government and engage in dialogue in order to find a way out of the current situation. It is clear from this latest series of attacks that Israel wishes to put a wedge between Fatah and Hamas.”
