Several hundred people have attended a lunchtime rally in Derry city centre in support of a one-day strike by public sector workers.
Many of the city’s public buildings are closed as a result of the industrial action by local members of the Unite, GMB, NIPSA and Unison trade union.
The strike is part of one-day strike organised throughout the North, England and Wales in protest at a one per cent pay increase offered to them by the government.
As a result, many of Derry’s public run facilities and Housing Executive offices are closed.
Striking workers in Derry gathered at Dale’s Corner in the Waterside and, led by a lone piper, marched to Guildhall Square for the lunchtime rally which was addressed by local trade union leaders.
Among those attended were Environment Minister, Mark Durkan, of the SDLP, the city’s Mayor Cllr Brenda Stevenson, Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney and local councillors.
Among the buildings closed are the city’s top tourist attractions, the Guildhall and Tower Museum.
Templemore Sports Complex, City Swimming Baths and Brooke Park Leisure Centre are also closed.
Picket lines have taken place outside a number of premises, Derry City Council’s offices on Strand Road and the Housing Executive office at Richmond Chambers.
