AS NORMAL SERVICE RESUMED: COUNCIL TO TRACK DOWN ILLEGAL DUMPERS

Derry City Council is to take legal action against those who dumped rubbish outside its civic amenities yesterday.

The recycling centres were closed due to the one-day strike action by public sector workers.

Despite signs on the shut gates of the centres stating it was illegal to leave rubbish outside the centre, several hundred turned up and dumped their rubbish at the entries.

Confirming normal services had resumed today, the Council said it would examine evidence to track down those responsible in order with a view to “bringing forward penalties where possible.”

A Council spokesperson said: “The dumping of waste outside of the amenity sites was regrettable. It is illegal to dump or leave rubbish outside of an approved site.

“Council will be collating any evidence with a view to bringing forward penalties where possible.”
