Anyone involved in “illegal activity” during today’s Orange Order parades will face the consequences of the criminal justice system, police have warned.
The warning comes as Orange men prepare to march across the North, including Derry, Limavady and Strabane.
In Derry, parades will take place prior to the departure of bands and lodges to the Orange Order’s main county demonstration in Limavady and upon their return.
City lodges will parade between Clooney Terrace and Bishop Street between 8.30am and 9.30am.
On their return from Limavady, there will be a similar parade between about 6.00pm and 7.00pm.
Extra police are expected in Strabane where the local Orange Lodge has been banned from parading through the town’s centre.
Strabane District LOL No14 had filed for four bands, numbering 200, and 100 supporters to parade along Derry Road Leppers Bray, Abercorn Square, Castle Street, Main Street, Market Street and Butcher Street to the Bowling Green that morning.
However, the Parades Commission has ruled the parade will not be allowed to proceed no further than the War Memorial on the Derry Road – in keeping with recent years.
Speaking ahead of today’s parades, a PSNI spokesperson said: “Police would like to remind everyone that while individuals have the right to peaceful, lawful protest, it is important to remember that with this comes responsibilities and anyone who engages in any illegal activity will face the consequences of the criminal justice system.”
