Police are keeping an open mind to the motive behind the planting of a “viable” bomb in the Waterside area of Derry this morning.
The alert, which has now ended, began when an explosive device was discovered at around 7.00am on the ground behind the rear wheel of a parked car at Westlake in the Enagh area.
It was examined by bomb disposal experts and a controlled explosion was carried out.
The device, which police described as “viable” was rendered safe and removed for examination.
A number of families who were moved from their homes during the alert have been allowed to return.
A PSNI spokesperson said detectives were “keeping an open mind” as to the motivation behind the attack and were appealing for witnesses or for anyone with information that could assist the investigation to get in touch with them.
The spokesperson said officers could be reached at Strand Road CID on the non-emergency telephone number 101.
The spokesperson added: “If someone would prefer to provide information without giving their name, they can contact the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
