Irresponsible cat owners have been blasted by a local charity for allowing unwanted kittens to be born.
The Rainbow Rehoming Centre hit out after what it described as the large number of pet owners turning up with unwanted kittens as “unbelievable.”
A spokesperson for the Centre said they were “disgusted” at people’s responsibility towards their pets.
The spokesperson said: “This year again the phone calls/emails and Facebook messages are coming in large number to the centre reference unwanted kittens.
“Unbelievably, the bulk of the contact is from pet owned cats.
“Our Centre has limited spaces and funds and we must put stray/abandoned and cruelty cases first.
“We are disgusted with people’s irresponsibility when it comes to their pets… often being told tall tales to cover their lack of responsibility.”
The spokesperson said those receiving benefits were entitled to the Cats Protection £5 neutering scheme available at vets throughout Northern Ireland.
The spokesperson added: “Here at the Centre, we don’t have the luxury of this benefit.
“If you are feeding a cat on a regular basis and the cat is living on a permanent basis around your home, please do the responsible thing and neuter the cat.
“Do not wait until you see kitten and then ask a charity to help.
“Please guys, help unwanted kittens leading to unwanted cats from being born.
“You the public have the power to change this.”
