A memorial to two UDR soldiers killed by the IRA in Castlederg 30 years ago has been defaced hours after a prayer service was held to remember them.
Norman McKinley and Heather Kerrigan were killed in a landmine attack while on foot patrol on Corgary Road on 14 July in 1984.
Wreaths left at the scene were removed and replaced by a pro-IRA poster.
Those responsible have been condemned by the police commander for the area.
Chief Inspector Andy Lemon said the incident was being investigated as a hate crime.
He added: “Incidents of this kind do nothing for community harmony in the area, indeed I believe the vast majority of people in and around Castlederg will be appalled by what has happened.”
CI Lemon said information could be given on the police non-emergency telephone number 101.
Alternatively, it could be provided to the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
