A Foodbank collection at the Lisnagelvin Tesco store in Derry earlier this month has gathered enough food to provide more than 3,000 meals for local people in need, it has been revealed.
Tesco – who topped up items donated by customers with a 30% donation themselves – has confirmed the collection at the Waterside store on 3-5 July last raised enough for 3,388 meals.
SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan, who part in the Foodbank, said to raise so much in one store was “fantastic” and is testament to the generosity of the people of Derry and surrounding area.
He added: “Foodbanks have become a vital service that is sadly needed by far too many people who find they can’t make ends meet.
Indeed, more and more people are finding themselves struggling to put food on the table – which is of particular concern for older and more vulnerable people and for a significant number of families.
“I am more than happy to give all the support I can to keep this service running and helping local people in need.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the customers who generously donated, Tesco for topping up the amount raised, and last but not least the fantastic volunteers without whom this vital service wouldn’t exist.”
