The purchase of the 62 acre former Herdsman’s Mill site by Strabane £27 million Euromillions jackpot winner, Margaret Loughrey, has opened up exciting prospects for socio-economic regeneration and recreation provision for Sion Mills and wider area, West Tyrone Sinn Fein MP Pat Doherty has said.
Mr Doherty said: “After such a long drawn out battle in opposition to the flawed plans to site a major anaerobic digester on this historic site, this news has first and foremost come as a great relief to the people of Sion and surrounding areas.
“Great tribute must go to the Sion Mills Community Group Against Waste Management Plant whose perseverance has paid off.
“The threat of a totally unsuited anaerobic digester for the village has now gone and instead the site now in the hand’s of a local owner with a stated commitment to not only to restore it’s historic buildings and grounds but to develop them for local benefit in terms of socio-economic regeneration and tourist attraction projects as well as recreation provision.
“This development has opened up exciting prospects for this prime site to be developed in a way which is appropriate to the village’s environs and in a way which can maximise the economic and social benefits for the people of the area.
“I wish Margaret and her new company, Rey Mill Ltd, every best wish in the development of these projects and I along with other local Sinn Féin elected representatives will be available to give whatever measure of practical support we can give in helping to progress these projects.”
