Former Derry City striker Stephen O’Flynn has turned down an offer from Dankse Bank Irish League Premiership rivals Coleraine in order to remain a part of Paul Kee’s Institute for another season.
Having trained with Coleraine over the pre-season period, many had given up hope on the journeyman staying with the Drumahoe club, but after “weighing up his options” the Cork man has opted to stay at the Riverside and is expected to re-sign this week for at least another year.
Team boss, Paul Kee, is sure to be delighted to retain the services of the striker who netted 13 goals for the “Babyblues” in the Championship last season.
Although, he has yet to “sign on the dotted line,” O’Flynn – who captained Stute in their 1-0 pre-season friendly win over Limavady United at the weekend – said he could see no obstacles in the way.
He said: “I am glad to be involved with the team again, I took long enough to get myself sorted out, but I’m back training now and I got to play 60 minutes today which is good.”
“I had the option to join Coleraine, so I spoke with my girlfriend, and weighed up my options to see what would be best for me, and I’ve decided that it’s in my best interest to stay.”
“I enjoyed playing for the club last year, and had a good season of form myself last year, and I want to continue that into the Premier League this season.”
“I still haven’t signed yet, I’m waiting to hear word from the manager, but hopefully we can get together and get it all confirmed soon so that our concentrations can turn purely to playing good football.”
