Funding of £114,000 to South West College to deliver the Going Places Programme in the Strabane Neighbourhood Renewal area has been announced by Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland.
Mr McCausland said ehe innovative programme would enhance the employability of residents living in the area by offering participants the chance to learn the skills most in demand with local employers.
The programme was developed in partnership with prominent local employers in the information technology/customer service and food manufacture sectors and representatives of the voluntary and vommunity sector in Strabane.
Announcing the funding Minister McCausland said the Going Places Programme had proven to be hugely successful in other towns in Northern Ireland.
He added: “Now local residents in Strabane will have opportunity to learn skills to enhance their employability in the local labour market.
“The programme will be delivered in three phases: firstly personal development to overcome barriers to employment, then structured training through a range of accredited courses specifically tailored to meet local employers’ needs and finally on the job training to put their learning into practice.
“I am very impressed that local businesses have been keen to support this programme and I believe it will have a positive impact in Strabane which suffers from high levels of unemployment.”
