The people of Derry have been urged to get behind the six athletes from the city taking part in the Commonwealth Games.
Speaking ahead of tonight’s opening ceremony at Celtic Park in Glasgow, SDLP MLA C0lum Eastwood said the city was “welling with pride” with six athletes “going for gold.”
Our hopes rest with triathlete Aileen Reid, boxers Conor Coyle and Sean McGlinchey, sprinter Jason Smyth, cycling time triallist Marcus Christie and wrestler Hugh McCloskey.
There are high hopes they will bring back medals.
Congratulating each on making the Games, Mr Eastwood commended them as “fantastic sporting ambassadors for the city.”
He added: “In the coming days, I will be joining with the people of Derry and beyond to cheer on our athletes at the Commonwealth Games.
“With no fewer than six local athletes competing in Glasgow in sports ranging from boxing to wrestling and sprinting to triathlon and cycling, Derry’s strong reputation as a city of sporting excellence is cemented even further.
“The athletes are all heroes in their communities, they are the pride of their respective sporting clubs and perfect role models for our young people.
“The consistent work and dedication our athletes have demonstrated to get to the Commonwealth Games has been tremendous and we will all be fully behind when they battle for honours in Glasgow.”
Mr Eastwood added: “With the cream of our athletes taking centre stage in Glasgow and the players of Derry City Football Club continuing their latest European adventure in Belarus this week, the people of the city will be welling with pride over the achievements of our sports people.”
He concluded: “I look forward to getting caught up in all the excitement and wish them all the very best of luck.”
