Derry’s Aileen Reid done her city proud when finishing sixth in the women’s triathlon on the opening day of the Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow.
Reid (32), a member of the North West Triathlon Club, was in contention for a medal position but fell off the pace going into the last lap of the running leg.
Earlier, she led the race for a period during the cycle leg.
Coming off the bike and going into the run leg, she was in second place but despite a brave performance found the hilly course just too much.
Jodie Simpson of England took the gold meda in 1.58.56, five seconds ahead of silver medallist Kirsten Sweetland of Canada with England’s Vicky Holland taking the bronze medal.
Reid is one of six competitors from Derry taking part in the Games.
The others are boxers Conor Coyle and Sean McGlinchey, sprinter Jason Smyth, cycling time triallist Marcus Christie and wrestler Hugh McCloskey.
