Shakhtar Soligorsk 5 Derry City 1
(Shakhtar win 6-1 on aggregate)
Derry City are out of this season’s Europa League after losing their second round second leg tie against Shakhtar Soligorsk 4-1 (5-1 on aggregate) in Belarus this evening.
Trailing by a single goal from last Thursday’s first leg tie in the Brandywell, Derry made the dream start when Michael Duffy put the Candystripes ahead in the sixth minute to send the travelling band of 20-odd City supporters into ecstasy.
However, the lead only lasted four minutes before Sergej Balanovich brought the home side level.
Shakhtar took a firm grip on the tie when Alexandre Guruli’s long range effort deflected off Danny Ventre, giving Doherty no chance.
In the second half, Artur Kotenko pulled off a good save from Rory Patterson before City, as they pushed forward, were caught on the break, Dmitri Osipenko firing home in the 68th minute.
Nikolai Yanush added a fifth when he finished from seven yards in the 81st minute before poor defending allowed substitute Andrej Lyavonchyk to score a fifth with almost the last kick of the game.
Shakhtar will play either Belgium’s FC Zulte Waregem or Polish side Zawisza Bydgoszcz in the third round qualifiers, the Belgians taking a 2-1 advantage into tonight’s second leg in Poland where the visitors currently lead 1-0, 3-1 on aggregate.
Meanwhile, Derry return to SSE Airtricity Premier Division action on Sunday when they travel to Dublin to take on the UCD (kick-off 5.00pm).
