Derry boxer Sean McGlinchey is through to the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games after a thrilling encounter in Glasgow tonight.
The 22-year-old from Creggan, making his first appearance in the tournament as a result of receiving a bye in the round of 32 (first round), booked his place in the last eight in the light heavyweight (81 kgs) division with a split decision points win over 23-year-old Cheavan Clarke, from Montego Bay in Jamaica, in Glasgow in one of the fights of the Glasgow 2014.m
In the quarter-finals, Sean will face Elly Ajowi Ochola on Wednesday, the 31 year old Kenyan having earlier defeated 25 year old Nigerian Lukmon Lawal on a split decision.
Meanwhile, Sean’s fellow Derry man, Connor Coyle, will face 25-year-old Dennis Thomas, from Georgetown in Guyana in a middleweight round of 16 bout tomorrow.
Connor, who boxes for St Joseph’s ABC in Galliagh, gained his place in the last 16 with a comfortable unanimous points win over 35-year-old Lungile Dyamdeki, of Lesotho, yesterday.
Thomas defeated 21-year-old Jonathan Keama, from Papua New Guinea, in the first round.
