Derry boxer Connor Coyle has made it through to the quarter-finals of the middleweight division at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 24-year-old St Joseph’s ABC man defeated 25-year-old Dennis Thomas, from Georgetown in Guyana, in a “round of 16” bout this afternoon.
Coyle, who throughout the bout concentrated on landing punches to the body of his much taller opponent, was unanimously awarded the first round by the judges.
After losing the second on a split-decision, he fought back with an impressive third round.
The Galliagh fighter now faces 25-year-old southpaw Siphiwe Lusizi on Wednesday, the South African having earlier an impressive unanimous points win over 19-year-old New Zealander Eric Finau.
Coyle is the second contestant from Derry to make it through to the final eight of the boxing at Glasgow 2014.
Last night, Oakleaf’s Sean McGlinchey booked his place in the quarter-finals in the light heavyweight (81 kgs) division with a split decision points win over 23-year-old Cheavan Clarke, from Montego Bay in Jamaica.
The 22-year-old Creggan man will tomorrow bid for a place in the semi-finals – and a guaranteed medal – when he takes on 31-year-old Elly Ajowi Ochola from Kenya.
