Derry boxer Sean McGlinchey vowed to go for gold after guaranteeing himself at least a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow tonight.
Sean (22), of Oak Leaf ABC, earned a unanimous points win over 31-year-old Kenyan Elly Ajowi Ochola to set up a semi-final bout on Friday against 18-year-old New Zealander David Nykia who also had a unanimous points victory over 21-year-old Sumit Sangwan, from Indian, in the quarter-finals.
Speaking after his win, the Creggan man dedicated the win to his one-year-old son, Callum, and said he was determined to win the gold medal.
He said: “I got there. I dug deep and got a medal for my wain.”
Sean will be back in the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre tomorrow to cheer on fellow Derry man, Connor Coyle, who takes on South African Siphiwe Lusizi in a quarter-final contest in the middleweight division.
Connor, of St Joseph’s ABC in Galliagh, booked his last eight spot with an impressive win over Guyana’s Dennis Thomas yesterday evening.
