Derry boxer Connor Coyle climbs back into the ring this evening in a bid to become the second fighter from the city to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 24-year-old St Joseph’s ABC fighter takes on South African Siphiwe Lusizi in a quarter-final contest in the middleweight division in the hope of joining fellow Derry man, Oak Leaf ABC’s Sean McGlinchey, in the semi-finals.
Sean, from Creggan, secured a semi-final bout and at least a bronze medal in the light-middleweight division last night.
In doing so the 22-year-old, who fights for Oak Leaf ABC, became the first boxer from Derry to win a medal at the Games in almost 30 years.
He will now be hoping to emulate his fellow Creggan man, Roy Nash – who won silver in the bantamweight division in the 1986 Games held in Edinburgh – when he confronts 18-year-old New Zealander David Nykia in the semi-final on Friday.
