Mayor of Derry Cllr Brenda Stevenson has condemned those responsible for yesterday’s gun attack on police in the city.

No one was injured when two shots hit a police landrover as it travelled along Westland Street in the Bogside area in the early hours of the morning.

Police, who believe the attack was carried out by dissident republicans, have described the incident as “reckless.”

Condemning the incident as a “despicable cowardly act,” Cllr Stevenson said the officers in the vehicle were lucky to escape injury and appealed to anyone with information to come forward.

She added: “The people responsible for this despicable cowardly act have no regard for law and order or for the well being of the people of this city.

“There is no support for this type of behaviour in our society, we have put that behind us and are moving towards a positive future.

“My thoughts are with the PSNI officers who were involved in this incident and offer them my support with the work they are doing to provide a service to the people of the city and region.”
