SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has expressed about the loss of vital support for people in Derry who are affected by the North West Migrant Centre’s announcement to cease their immigration advice service due to funding difficulties.
Over the last four years, people in Derry have sought immigration advice via the Belfast Migrant Centre’s satellite office at The Old Church on Clarendon Street.
Mr Durkan said the loss of the service would leave a “significant” gap in services available to the migrant population in Derry and their families.
He added: “This service has been invaluable, not least for the people in our community who have benefited from it – and in many cases relied on it.
“I very much hope that funding can be secured to allow this invaluable service to continue.”
Mr Durkan said receiving professional advice and representation on often complex areas of an international and European context were “vital components” of meeting the needs of our constituents.
He concluded: “I have therefore provided support to the Belfast Migrant Centre – stressing I would be more than happy to support future funding applications in order to restore this vital service.”
