A candlelit Service of Commemoration and Reflection will be held in St Columb’s Cathedral in Derry tonight to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.
Everyone is invited to participate in the service which begins at 10.00pm and will include readings, poetry and music.
Meanwhile, residents here are being encouraged to switch off their lights between 10.00pm and 11.00pm tonight and light a single candle in remembrance of those killed during the conflict which began 100 years ago today.
Speaking ahead of the event, DUP Alderman Maurice Devenney said: “I think it is vitally important that we mark the declaration of war by Britain in this poignant and significant way. As we all know, there were so many people from Ireland – both North and South – who fought in the First World War.
He added: “There are so many people from Londonderry who fought in the War and it is correct and appropriate that they should be remembered in this way.”
