Plans to redevelop the former Gino’s retail store on Derry’s Shipquay Street into a new bar and restaurant have been ratified by Derry City Council.
Owners of the adjacent River Inn, Mr and Mrs Brian Doherty, plan to redevelop the property to include a new cafe/restaurant to the front of the premises and a bar to the rear.
Environment Minister Mark H Durkan said the project was a “real boost” for Shipquay Street.
He added: “I very much welcome Derry City Council’s backing for the re-use of a vacant property which lies within the Historic City Conservation Area.
“This project will inject investment into the Historic City whilst bringing a vacant property back into use and adding to the vitality and viability of the city centre.
“What I am about is a better environment and stronger economy. This decision will help that.”
