Those involved in “street racing” in the Skeoge Road area of Derry have been condemned as “reckless” and “completely irresponsible>”.
Speaking after receiving numerous complaints from local residents, Shantallow SDLP Cllr Mark O’Donnell if the behaviour continued it was only a matter of time before someone was killed.
Cllr O’Donnell said: “Over the last week I have once again received complaints from residents in the Skeoge Road area about dangerous driving and illegal road racing.
“This has become an almost weekly occurrence along this particular route and continues to blight daily life for those living nearby.”
“As a resident myself I have witnessed several instances of extremely dangerous manoeuvres being undertaken by drivers late at night and at weekends.
“This type of activity is completely unacceptable, these are public roads used by children and the elderly. It is not a racetrack.
“It is only a matter of time before we are dealing with a serious injury or worse a death”
“I have made the police aware of this ongoing issue and I would urge anyone who sees any dangerous driving in the area to do the same.”
Cllr O’Donnell concluded: “I would appeal to those involved to respect local residents and the safety of other road users by driving responsibly”
