The van used in the armed robbery of a border filling station earlier this was stolen from Derry city centre earlier in the day, the PSNI has revealed.
Police in the city are hunting a man after a staff member at the Texaco filling station just across the border in Muff in Inishowen was forced to hand over £1,000.
The staff member was uninjured but was was left badly shaken by the ordeal during which he was threatened with a long-bladed knife.
Owner Colm McKenna has offered a reward of £1,000 for any information following the incident which occurred shortly before 5.30pm Tuesday.
The robber, described as being six feet tall and who was wearing a high viz jacket, escaped in a white Transit van which was later found abandoned in Carnhill in Derry 10 minutes later.
The vehicle, which had one of its windows broken, was seized by police for forensic examination.
The robbery was captured on CCTV.
Derry police have revealed the van was taken from outside a barber’s shop in Great James Street in the city around 2.00pm that day by a man described as six feet tall with black hair, wearing a grey hooded top.
A PSNI spokesperson asked anyone who was in the area of Great James Street on Tuesday and saw the van being taken or was in the Cairnhill area later that day when it was abandoned to contact PSNI in Foyle on the non-emergency 101 telephone number.
The spokesperson added: “Or if you would like to pass information without giving your details you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0845 600 8000.”
