The family of former Derry Gaelic football captain Kevin McCloy, who was rushed to hospital last night after collapsing on the pitch during a club game, have said they are “grateful” for the help and the well-wishes they have received.
The former All-Star was playing for his club side Lavey against Magherafelt in a second round championship game at Owenbeg in Dungiven when he became ill ten minutes into the game which was abandoned
After being treated by paramedics on the pitch, he was rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital.
In statement, the family said the 35-year-old was “stable” and was currently undergoing “assessment.”
The statement added: “Kevin’s wife and family are very grateful to those who are caring for Kevin and to all who have offered good wishes and prayers for Kevin. At this time they request that their privacy be respected.”
John Keenan, Derry GAA chairperson, has offered his thoughts to the player and his family whilst praising the work of the medics who were understood to have used a defibrillator on the pitch.
He said: “The thoughts of Derry GAA, its clubs and players are with Kevin McCloy, his family and all at Lavey GAA.
“We would like to praise the players, match officials and stewards, and the medical teams of both clubs at Owenbeg for their swift actions in attending Kevin. In particular, I wish to commend the efforts of the doctors and paramedics present at the ground, and the swift response of the paramedics from Altnagelvin Hospital.”
The player’s club have also expressed their best wishes.
A statement said: “On behalf of the club officers, management, players and supporters of Lavey GAA, we would like to express our best wishes to our senior football club captain, Kevin McCloy, his wife and family. They are all in our thoughts and prayers at this time.”
