The Mayor of Derry, Councillor Brenda Stevenson, has paid tribute to the acclaimed local BBC broadcaster Gerry Anderson, who has sadly passed away after a long illness at the age of 69.
Renowned for his easy banter with his audience and roguish style, tributes have been flooding in to BBC Radio Foyle where he lit up the airways on his daily show alongside “sidekick” and co-presenter Seán Coyle.
Cllr Stevenson said: “I was deeply saddened this morning to hear the news that one of Derry’s most renowned broadcasters and best loved personalities, Gerry Anderson, has passed away.
“His irreverent humour and acerbic wit on air made him a favourite in every household and his unique brand of comedy spanned the generations.
“Gerry brought laughter to his beloved Stroke City in even the darkest days and he will leave an unfillable gap in both broadcasting and our community as a whole.”
She concluded: “I offer my condolences to his wife Christine, his family, his many friends and of course to his close associates at Radio Foyle who will be grieving the loss of a great man today.”
