FINES AND CONDITIONAL DISCHARGE FOR BENEFIT CHEATS

derrycourthouseFour men have received sentences ranging from a conditional discharge to fines at Derry Magistrates Court for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Richard Thompson (31), of Sperrin Park in the Waterside, claimed Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £3,735 while failing to declare employment.

He was fined £500 and ordered to pay an offender levy of £15 and courts costs of £43.

Henry O’Hagan (29), of Elmwood Terrace, claimed Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £1,592 while failing to declare employment.

He was given a two year conditional discharge and ordered to pay court costs of £37.

Sean Thornton (24), of Abbots Walk, claimed Jobseekers Allowance totalling £490 while failing to declare employment.

He was fined £200 and ordered to pay an offender levy of £15.

Robert Holmes (39), of Bonds Hill in the Waterside, was fined £100 and ordered to pay an offender levy of £15 and court costs of £19 for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £142.

All four are also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency
