The shooting of a man in Strabane last night has been described as “barbaric” by SDLP councillor for the area, Patsy Kelly.
A 28-year-old man was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital after he was shot in the legs in the Ballycolman area shortly after 7.00pm.
Describing the shooting as “an attack on the entire community,” Cllr Kelly said nnce again those intent on violence had “brought pain and misery” to Strabane.
He added: “The shooting of a man in the Ballycolman area in what appears to be a ‘punishment style’ attack is nothing short of barbaric.
“Those behind it have set themselves up as judge, jury and executioner with no regard for this man, his family or the wider community.
“It is utterly deplorable that in this day and age we still have gunmen serving their brand of rough justice on our streets.
“They have no right to walk all over this community and we cannot allow it to continue.”
Cllr Kelly concluded: “My thoughts and prayers are with the victim of this brutal attack and his family this evening. I would urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.”
PSNI Sergeant McIlewaine asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has any information to contact police at Strabane on the non emergency 101 telephone number.
Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
