Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has encouraged people to attend the Foyle Pride Festival parade taking place in Derry this afternoon.
The parade is due to leave Waterside railway station at 2.0opm and make its way through the city centre to the Guildhall.
The parade is the highlight of the festival which celebrates the lives of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community in the North West, promoting inclusion and respect and celebrating city’s rich cultural mix.
Ms Anderson said the parade was a “fantastic occasion” that had become a “real fixture” in the city’s calendar.
She added: “The annual Foyle Pride parade is a fantastic occasion that has become a real fixture in the city’s calendar.
“It is a great celebration of equality, tolerance and diversity.
“The Foyle Pride Festival recognises the huge contribution the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community make to our society.
“Over the last few days it has included a wide range of events raising awareness of many important issues.
“Unfortunately, homophobia still exists in our society and the Foyle Pride Festival offers everyone an opportunity to show solidarity with the LGBTQ&I community and demonstrate our rejection of such narrow-mindedness.”
She concluded: “I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and take part in this fantastic event on Saturday at 2pm from the Waterside train station to the Guildhall.”
