4 Lanterns Ulster Senior League
Cockhill Celtic 1 Derry City Reserves 1
Derry City ended their 4 Lanterns Ulster Senior League with a 1-1 draw with champions Cockhill Celtic in Buncrana yesterday.
Both sides finished the season unbeaten, the first time two teams went through a season without defeat – City’s draw against Bonagee a couple of weeks ago proving costly and denying them the chance of a play-off.
John Quigg’s young Derry side started brightly and deservedly took a lead in the 25th minute when Ronan Curtis broke clear and smashed a low drive past Lee McCarron in the home goal.
Following a few stern words by manager, former Derry City striker Donal O’Brien, Cockhill emerged more positive and the breakthrough came when Garbhan Friel converted a penalty after he had been upended in the box by Celtic keeper Michael Lynch.
Cockhill could have grabbed a late winner when former Derry City midfieler Gerry Gill tested Lynch from 15 yards.
