The amalgamation of Craigbrack, Listress and Mullabuoy Primary Schools will ensure “a first education” for the rural area of Derry for the foreseeable future, local Sinn Fein Councillor Paul Fleming has said.
Cllr Fleming was speaking after Education Minister John O’Dowd approved planning permission for Derry primary schools to come together to form one school, due to open in September next year.
Cllr Fleming said was important a “sustainable” primary school was maintained in the rural area of Derry and “this solution” would allow that to happen.
He added: “The education of our children is crucial to their development so it is essential that we provide the proper facilities in order for this to happen.
“The amalgamation of these schools will ensure that there will be a modern primary school in the area for the foreseeable future equipped with bringing the best out of our children.”
Granting planning permission, Mr O’Dowd said the amalgamation plan was “considered to be the best solution for securing high-quality education now, and into the future”.
He added: “The amalgamation will meet parental demand and ensure a broad, balanced curriculum in one viable and sustainable school.
Mr O’Dowd concluded: “This proposal is considered to be the best solution for securing high quality education now and into the future.”
