Holidaymakers returning from Spain faced a lengthy delay getting through “passport control” at City of Derry Airport this morning because no members of the UK Border Patrol were there to allow them through.
Passengers on board the Ryanair flight from Alicante were informed they had to wait on the arrival of UK Border Patrol staff to check their passports before they would be allowed to leave the building.
A spokesperson for Derry City Council, who own the airport, said staff :”did their best” to accommodate passengers.
The flight, which was due to land at 9.30am, had touched down half an hour early.
However, it is understood passengers were told to expect a delay of up to 90 minutes to await the arrival of UK Border Patrol staff.
The outward flight to Alicante, due to leave at 9.45am, took off almost 40 minutes late.
