Derry has the potential of becoming a “key global player” in the maritime tourism industry, according SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan.
Mr Durkan was speaking after the city was visited by representatives from US Historical Military Tours who are exploring the possibility of developing tours featuring the Derry’s links with the US Marines, the Battle of the Atlantic and the surrender of the German U Boats at Lisahally.
Mr Durkan, who arranged for the representatives to meet Mayor of Derry Cllr Brenda Stevenson and other Council officers, said: “I very much welcome this week’s visit by representatives from US Historical Military Tours.

“Ever since I negotiated the transfer of Ebrington from the MoD in 2002 as Deputy First Minister I have believed that this transformative riverfront site should house an interpretation of Derry’s pivotal role in the Battle of the Atlantic alongside the rest of our rich maritime history – including as a major port of emigration and trade.
“Indeed, the Maritime Museum which will be built on the Ebrington site will be a key addition to the city’s heritage and tourism portfolio.
“We have a great opportunity to emphasise the special and varied maritime history of Derry to a global audience – which will appeal to citizens and visitors alike and the enlightenment of future generations.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “It is vital we make the most of our key heritage assets and build best on the different tourism opportunities in front of us – not least by attracting back to Derry many of those American Irish who have a direct link with our city so they can see for themselves how the former military base has been transformed into such a peaceful and enjoyable space.”
