A new commemorative 68c stamp and envelope celebrating the life of the late poet Seamus Heaney has been issued in the Republic.
The stamp features a black and white photo of late Poet Laureate, one of the world’s best-known poets, and recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature.
A special first day cover envelope shows an extract from his 1969 poem, Bogland.
Both items can be purchased at all main post offices in the Republic, at the GPO Stamp Shop and online at irishstamps.ie.
Mr Heaney died on 30 August last year, aged 74.
The poet’s son, Michael, said the Heaney family were “immensely moved” that An Post had chosen to mark his father’s memory with the issue of the stamp.
The issuing of a special stamp and envelope has also been welcomed by Foyle SDLP MP, Mark Durkan.
Mr Durkan, who presented a special parliamentary tribute to Seamus Heaney’s widow Marie and daughter Catherine at Westminster last year, said the issuing of the special stamp and envelope by An Post was a “tremendous tribute” to the poet and was “a mark” of what he meant to people throughout Ireland.
He added: “I am sure Marie and his family will be very touched by it – just as they have been touched over the last year by all of the expressions of sadness and condolences from people throughout the world.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “It is a poignant way to remember such a brilliant poet and a good Derry man.”
