Derry City Council has been allocated funding of almost £54,000 for the Pride In Our City scheme.
The funding, allocated by the Department of Social Development, will be used to provide the materials required to “soft landscape the Culmore and Ballyarnet roundabouts located on main arterial routes into the city, as well as purchase additional barrier planters, bulbs and shrubs for the city centre.
Announcing the funding, Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said the scheme would help to ensure the excellent “horticultural standards” set in recent years by the City Council were maintained.
He added: “This scheme contributed significantly to Londonderry winning a Gold Award in the Small City Category in the finals of Britain in Bloom 2013 and the additional funding I have provided will build on that achievement. The attractive landscaping displays play an important part in portraying a positive image of the city.”
Mayor Cllr Brenda Stevenson said due to significant funding from the Department, the city and in particular the Quayside area, had “never looked so good.”
Mayor Stevenson said: “Over the summer months and following on from the phenomenal success of the LegenDerry Maritime Festival as hosts of the Clipper Race yachts, we have welcomed thousands of international visitors to the city. In particular, the Quay walkway area was transformed by the work of Derry City Council’s ground maintenance and cleansing team who worked to ensure that the floral displays where in place and blooming bright and colourful.
“The landscaping and planting that has been carried out at a number of roundabouts is significant in adding to the transformation of the city and providing a landscaped beautiful city for locals and visitors alike. The continuation of support from the Department for Social Development this year and previous years in enabling this work is as always very much appreciated.”
