Derry City captain Cliff Byrne has left the club by mutual consent, the Brandywell club has announced.
The 32-year-old, who is currently out injured and is several weeks away from fitness, left the Brandywell club shortly before the end of last night’s transfer deadline.
The Dubliner has appeared only once for Derry since the heavy Europa League defeat in Soligorsk last month and has been an unused substitute with manager Peter Hutton opting for Ryan McBride and Aaron Barry as his central defensive partnership.
Prior to his injury, he made 21 appearances and scored one goal early in the season against Drogheda United.
He was signed from Scunthorpe by Roddy Collins before the start of the season.
A statement on the club website stated: “We would like to thank Cliff Byrne for his effort and professionalism during his time with the Candystripes and wish him all the best with his future career in football.”
