SDLP East Derry MLA John Dallat has called for an independent assessment of what benefits rural dwellers have derived from millions of pounds of public money awarded to internet providers to provide a decent connection for their computers.
Mr Dallat said there was a “growing sense of hopelessness” that rural people were never going to get a decent internet service fit for purpose and, for that reason, many were now turning to satellite, which was much more expensive and “well beyond the pockets” of many who depended on internet for many reasons.
Mr Dallat added: “Many others simply cannot afford that option and are, therefore, marginalised and very angry that they are second-class citizens when it comes to modern communication.
“Internet is no longer a luxury or a novelty, but vital to the farming community, rural businesses, the education of rural children and, indeed, many others who increasingly can only access government services if they have a decent internet connection.
“This issue is not confined to people living in isolated rural areas, but also impacts many people – privately, those involved in business and in education in many towns and villages across the rural north.”
Mr Dallat concluded: “The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Development has a serious responsibility to find out why so much money has been spent on internet enhancement, and yet why so many people are still struggling with a connection which is hopelessly inferior and not fit for purpose.”
