The continued isolation of republican prisoners in Maghaberry jail “is wrong,” Derry MLA Raymond McCartney has said.
Mr McCartney, a member of the Stormont Justice Committee, was speaking after visiting prisoners in Maghaberry with SInn Fein colleague Jennifer McCann MLA and Séanna Walsh from Coiste na nIarchimí.
During the visit, they met five prisoners who are currently held in isolation because the Northern Ireland Office believes they are under threat.
However, Mr McCartney said: “It is our view that these prisoners meet the criteria for admittance into the segregated regime in Roe House.
“We are of the opinion that these alleged threats are spurious as there is no clear evidence.
“Their continued isolation is wrong.”
Mr McCarntey called on the Northern Ireland Office and Secretary of State to “immediately ensure” these prisoners were transferred to Roe House.
He concluded: “It is our intention to seek a meeting with Theresa Villiers to highlight our concerns about the ongoing isolation of these prisoners.”
