Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan has called for a major public realm scheme in the Shantallow area of Derry.
Cllr Hassan said such scheme could have the same positive impact as the schemes in the city centre over the past number of years.
He said the general area of the Racecourse Road from Carnhill to Bradley Park including the Shantallow shops were in a “bad state of repair” and needed a facelift.
He added: “The poor condition of footpaths, buildings and poor lighting has added to a sense of dereliction and less people using the facilities.
“When you look at work in the city centre over the last number of years it has transformed the city and it is looking so well I believe it is time now to look at other areas in the city that need a public realm scheme.
“I would call on the Department of Social Development (DSD) to introduce a similar scheme in the Shantallow area of the city in order to revitalise the area.”
Cllr Hassan added there was a need and onus for the business communities in the area to get involved and work alongside the statutory agencies in order to agree a plan.
He concluded: “I will be writing to the DSD to explore all opportunities and seek the assistance from other statutory agencies that hopefully will succeed in ensuring that the Shantallow area will get a face-lift that it much needs.”
