Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has secured an adjournment debate in the Assembly – to take place next Tuesday – on the campaign for the expansion of the Magee campus of the University of Ulster at Magee in Derry.
There has been widespread anger in the city following recent comments by the Employment and Learning Minister Stephen Farry casting doubt on the expansion.
Stating the Minister’s comments had caused “great alarm,” Ms McLaughlin said the expansion of Magee was vital for the development and regeneration of city.
She added: “There is a political and civic consensus that the Magee expansion must go ahead.”
Ms McLaughlin said the debate would allow local representatives and others to outline the importance of the expansion of the campus.
She added: “A full business case for the expansion of Magee will be on the employment and learning minister’s desk in October and it is our hope he will look positively on that.”
Ms McLaughlin concluded: “The expansion of Magee is a crucial part of the One Plan, which is a Programme for Government commitment, and Sinn Féin is determined to see it delivered.”
