Derry cleric Eamon Martin has been congratulated becoming Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland by Foyle SDLP MP Mark Durkan.
Archbishop Martin becomes the leader of Ireland’s 4.6 catholics following the decision by Pope Francis to accept the resignation of Cardinal Sean Brady.
Mr Durkan, who has known Archbishop Eamon Martin since their primary school days at Pennyburn PS in Derry, said: “Eamon has gone from St Patrick’s Primary School in Pennyburn and an altar boy there to become St Patrick’s successor in Armagh.
“While he has gone far in that sense he has always remained rooted.
“While Eamon is a naturally humble man I hope he can enjoy the genuine pride that will again be felt by his family, his home parish, his schools and the Derry Diocese today.
“The Eamon Martin that I have known since childhood has always been approachable, able and adaptable. He has already proved himself in Armagh as a pastor of real engagement, empathy and inspiration.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “In his new role of pastoral leadership, he will deservedly have good will and prayers from people across the country and beyond his own church.”
