The shooting of a teenager in the Ballymagroarty area of Derry last night has been condemned as “barbaric” by SDLP Foyleside Councillor John Boyle who described those who carried out the attack as “gun-toting thugs.”

The 17-year-old was shot in both legs at a green area behind O’Riada Court at around 11.o0pm.

He was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital for treatment to injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Condemning those responsible, Cllr Boyle said the “barbaric” attack “serves no purpose.”

Cllr Boyle added: “The gun-toting thugs responsible for this shooting need to realise there is absolutely no justification for this type of attack, and that there is no support in the community for it.

“I am appealing to anyone who knows anything about what happened to contact police.”
