North West Sinn Féin Councillors Rory Donaghy and Maolíosa McHugh were among a delegation that lobbied the Regional Development Committee at Hillsborough Castle regarding the congestion and other problems in Dungiven in Co Derry and Clady in Co Tyrone.
The group was accompanied Barry Lafferty, secretary of the Clady Community Association.
Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Donaghy said Dungiven and Clady shared a “similar problem” of high air pollution caused by heavy traffic flowing through the town and village with over 16,000 vehicles passing through the areas daily.
He added: “The high levels of pollution is causing severe health risk to the residents of both Dungiven and Clady so it welcome to be able to make a presentation to the
Regional Development Committee.
Cllr McHugh, presiding councillor of the newly-formed Derry City and Strabane District Council, said the risks from high level of traffic pollution were “well known.”
He added: “So we impressed upon the committee the need to construct bypasses and I also raised the fact that heavy vehicles crossing into and out of Donegal are directed towards Clady by Sat-Nav and the need to have this corrected.”
Cllr McHugh: “We intend to keep this issue on the agenda until alternative routes are sorted that will result in a huge reduction in the number of vehicles using these roads.”
