Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) has invested £100,000 into its apprentice school in Campsie, outside Derry, making it the first dedicated transmission training school in the Northern Ireland.
The erection of three transmission towers measuring up to 12.3 metres in height will enable apprentices, transmission engineers and contractors to practice working on such constructions.
The Campsie training school is where NIE apprentices train to work on the overhead line network.
Currently, the school has a range of wooden poles at different voltages, however the three new transmission towers will add a unique dimension to their training and increase the skills of our apprentices.
Raymond McMenemey, NIE Training Manager said the new towers were an “exciting addition” to the overhead training school.
He added: “Working on transmission towers is highly specialised work and practise usually occurs on live jobs or when there are outages so it can be quite difficult.”
Mr McMenemy concluded: Our apprentices can now practise in a safe and controlled environment.”
