An FAI Cup final between Derry City and near neighbours Finn Harps remains a possibility after the Ballybofey side made light work of their quarter-final replay against Avondale United at Finn Park tonight.
Two goals from striker Kevin McHugh and one apiece from Gareth Harkin and Damien McNulty secured a 4-1 win which sees Harps in the last four of the cup for the first time in 15 years.
Harkin gave Ollie Horgan’s side the lead as early as the 11th minute, McNulty doubling the advantage in the 38th minute.
Veteran striker McHugh put the game beyond the Cork side with two goals in six minutes.
The former Derry City striker found the back on the net in 60th minute and successfully converted a penalty six minutes later after Gareth Harkin was brought down in the box by Danny O’Leary, for which the visiting keeper was shown a straight red card.
Roy Long bagged a consolation goal for Avondale five minutes from time.
Derry booked their place in the semi-finals with a 5-0 hammering of Drogheda United at Brandywell last night.
