Derry is still a blooming marvellous city – and that’s official.
The city has once again been awarded first place in the city category of the prestigious annual Ulster in Bloom competition.
The competition, now in its 36th year, was judged using criteria set by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) focussing on horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation.
Danny McCartney, Head of Grounds Maintenance at Derry City Council, praised the work of council staff in winning the award.
He said: “The grounds maintenance and cleansing staff worked hard to ensure that the city looked its best ahead of the competition and we are delighted to have come up trumps again.”
Mayor of Derry, Cllr Brenda Stevenson, praised all those involved.
She said: “I would like to extend my congratulations to the Derry City Council grounds maintenance and cleansing teams in securing this prestigious award for the city.”
Stating the award would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of the Council teams responsible for keeping the city looking pristine, adding it was a “great achievement” for the city and an important accolade during its year as Music City 2014.
She added: “Derry has bright and colourful plant and floral displays that welcome visitors to our city and are also admired by those of us who live and work here.”
She concluded: “I hope that this latest award brings a well-deserved sense of civic pride and all those involved should feel a real sense of achievement as we mark another exciting year for the city and region.”
