A decision to delay scheduled roadworks in Strabane to facilitate fans travelling to Sunday’s All-Ireland football finals in Dublin on Sunday has been welcomed by Derry SDLP MP Mark Durkan.
Thousands of Donegal fans will head south this weekend for the Croke Park “double header” featuring the Donegal and Kerry senior and minor teams.
Mr Durkan said the Department of Regional Development has confirmed the planned roadworks would be deferred avoid traffic delays in the town.
Mr Durkan said: “As soon as I became aware of the GAA concerns for supporters’ journeys I contacted the Minister for Regional Development Danny Kennedy.
“I stressed that the scheduled roadworks on the Great Northern Link in Strabane would cause untold disruption to supporters, and that the planned diversion routes would not easily accommodate the volume of traffic that All-Ireland Sunday would bring.
“In fairness the Minister’s office quickly took the point about the disproportionate impact of the proposed closure for works on this key artery on this of all occasions.
“I want to thank the Minister and his officials who came back quickly to say that the work will now be deferred.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “We don’t want people to have a difficult journey on what we all hope will be a great day for Donegal!”
