Young people from the Galliagh area of the city are being urged to stay away from fires before someone gets hurt.
SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney was speaking after a fire was started in the front garden of a house in the Galliagh Park area around 6:30pm yesterday.
No one was in the house at the time and firefighters were quickly on the scene to extinguish the blaze before it caused any further damage.
Councillor Tierney said again another family had been left in turmoil after the “thoughtless actions” of young people who seem to think it’s “good fun” to light fires.
“Thankfully, no one was hurt in this incident but that’s just down to luck.
“Incidents like this are becoming too familiar in this area and they need to stop before someone gets hurt or maybe worse.
“I would appeal to young people In this area to think before they act.
“I have spoken to this family and they are very upset at what has happened.
“However< they are thankful that no one was hurt.”
Cllr Tierney concluded: “I would also pay tribute to the Northern Ireland fire and Rescue Service for the quick and professional manner which they carried out their duties.”
